Tropical Breakfast Smoothie

Many people buy smoothies because they are trying to choose a healthy option for breakfast or a snack.  However, be careful because many smoothies are not as healthy as you think, especially when they come from fast food places like Dunkin’ Donuts and McDonalds.  Even the ones at places like Jamba Juice are loaded with sugar.  You are already getting the natural sugar from the fruit.  Many times bottled fruit juice, in addition to honey or other sweeteners are also added.  That’s a heck of a lot of sugar for 1 drink.  Although low in fat, these are high in sugar and calories; both of these factors that lead to weight gain.

In this smoothie, naturally sweet fruit, in combination with whole grains, lowfat dairy and a protein punch make this a healthier alternative than the sugar packed smoothies, readily available at your favorite chain store.

Fruit Protein Powder

With a protein powder punch, this smoothie is meant to be a complete meal.  I used this fruit protein powder  to complement the fresh fruit I used in this smoothie.  You can use a veggie based one, if you prefer.

 

Tropical Breakfast Smoothie

Ingredients:
8 pitted dates
1/3 cup oat bran
1 cup 2% lowfat milk
1/2 pineapple, chopped
1 mango
1 teaspoon ground cardamom
1 scoop protein powder
2 teaspoons flaxseed
1 teaspoon wheat germ

Soak oat bran and dates in milk overnight.  This is what it will look like the morning, almost like a porridge as the oat bran will have absorbed much of the milk.

The next morning, place the flaxseed in a blender and grind them. (I used the ice crush button on my blender).
Add all other ingredients and blend well, until a homogenous smoothie is achieved.

Serves 2

The key is to use very ripe fruit so that the only sweetener needed is the natural sugar from the fruit.  It is filling and can serve as breakfast, without other accompaniments.  Thick, creamy and fruity, it is very satisfying.  While healthy, it is still sweet & delicious – perfect for adults and kids alike!
