Having a few recipe hacks under your sleeve is great knowledge to have in the kitchen. With these hacks, there is no need to feel intimidated in the kitchen. For the first Bake-a-Thon post on Friday, I showed you a quick cake decorating hack. Today, we are moving to a savory dish. Have you ever had anything dressed or garnished with balsamic glaze, also known as a balsamic reduction? If you haven’t, boy are you missing out! Balsamic Vinegar is reduced until it is a molasses like consistency and can be infused with spices and herbs, to your preference. With its reduction, a tart sweet flavor is developed which makes this condiment work well in both savory and sweet dishes. Check out Mango Parfait & Beet Mozzarella Salad for some recipe examples of infused balsamic reductions. Once you have the reduction made, it can last forever. I keep it in the refrigerator just to be safe and bring it back to room temperature before using. Today in this Balsamic Glazed Beets, having this simple condiment on hand, made some roasted beets extra special in just one minute.
I added some herbaceousness by utilizing Herbs de Provence. Herbs de Provence is a French spice mix that is a variety of green herbs and lavender. The lavender adds a floral component which is a great marriage with naturally sweet beets. Dried rose would also make a great alternative. The result is a dish that is herbaceous, tart, sweet and tangy all at the same time. It reminds me of the multi layered flavor profiles of Thai food. You can also achieve the same rich flavors in other cuisines.
This side dish is a perfect compliment to any meal! Consider it to add to your Christmas dinner!
