Maharashtra Tapioca Fritters…Sago Vada – Sago is similar to tapioca and commonly used in South Asia for a variety of savory foods. Try these fritters and you will become a fan of savory sago!

 

Maharashtra Tapioca Fritters...Sago VadaMaharashtra, located in Southwestern coastal India, is most noted for being home to Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. The world over, Indian or not, has many Bollywood fans including this one. Mumbai is the center of the Bollywood industry. Until you make it to Mumbai to take a Bollywood tour, how about trying a local Maharashtrian snack?

For any foodie, a visit to Juhu Beach is a must. Juhu is a Mumbai suburb, located 18 miles out of the city. It is a popular tourist attraction and many Bollywood celebrities live in the area, which is how it got its tag of “Beverly Hills of Bollywood”. It’s known for some of the best street food in India like bhel puri and pani puri. You might also be able to get these vada, if you visit?

I was lucky enough to visit Mumbai for a few days and at Juhu Beach, I had Tava Pulao and pav bhaji. If you do get the chance to visit, try as much as your stomach can take. It’s really a fun night. Juhu Beach opens at night and families sit on the beach enjoying all of the delicious food. Don’t miss a visit to Juhu Beach when you visit Mumbai! Nice and crispy exterior..these are a crowd pleaser!

Maharashtra Tapioca Fritters…Sago Vada

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sago soaked in water for 2 hours
  • 1 large potato boiled, peeled and mashed
  • 2 green chiles finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chile powder cayenne pepper
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons cilantro finely chopped
  • salt
  • oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine all ingredients, except the oil and mix well.
  • Heat enough oil in a skillet for shallow frying.
  • With wet hands, form into little patties.
  • Place in the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides.

  2. Mir, these pictures are really captivating! The vadas looks very crispy…I have had bad experience making these (some 10 yrs back) and I never attempted to make these again. It had soaked up so much oil, that I just could not eat them. I should try them again soon 🙂
