Khubani Ka MItha - Hyderabadi Apricot Dessert

Happy Memorial Day!!! As we honor today all of the men and women who serve our country and pray for all the families who lost loved ones during the devastating tornadoes last week, I am presenting this sweet treat to lighten your heart away from these serious thoughts.

Hyderabad, an industrialized city located in southeastern India, is widely known throughout India for its cuisine, among other things. Also known as Deccani cuisine, it was developed by Turkish shah, Sultan Quli, part of the Qutb Shahi Dynasty that ruled Hyderabad from 1518-1687. Their cuisine is a fusion of Turkish, Arabic and Mughlai cuisine with local Telugu flavors. Many of their desserts feature apricots, not as widely used in other areas of India. This apricot dessert is a Hyderabad specialty, served at weddings and other special occasions.

When I looked at recipes for Hyderabadi Khubani Ka Mitha, the use of dried apricots with a lot of additional sugar made me think it would be a bit too sweet; almost like eating a bowl of jam. However, when I saw a version using fresh apricots instead and less sugar, I knew I wanted to try it. This is my version of this traditional Indian dessert!

Although I made this version with whipped cream to make a more aesthetic presentation, it can also be simply just drizzled with heavy cream.

    • I don’t either because they generally have such a short time period that they are in the markets. Peaches and plums are more readily available but this dessert is definitely worth a try!
