Why Tanzania Remains the Most Preferred Destination by Foreign Visitors?
Founded in 1964 with the merger of Tanganyika and Zanzibar Archipelago that had recently gained independence from European colonialism, United Republic of Tanzania is the 13th largest country in the world. Did you know for protection of its diverse wildlife, about 38% of its land area has been categorized as conserved area? It is home to 16 National Parks, numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites, and miles of white sand beaches besides other natural wonders.
Intrigued? The good news is that the immigration department lists only 23 countries, the visitors from which must obtain a visa before traveling and the rest either require no visa or are issued one for tourists for a stay of 3 months on-arrival. Whilst you are making up your mind, here are the top reasons why Tanzania is considered to be one of the most preferred destinations by foreign visitors
The Sights
Mount Kilimanjaro
The first thing that comes to our mind when we hear the name Tanzania is the highest mountain peak in Africa, Mt Kilimanjaro which is also called the roof of Africa. Located near the country’s border with Kenya, it is located in north-eastern Tanzania which has a snow-capped peak despite its close proximity to the equator.
Did you know that it is not a mountain but an inactive volcano? This natural wonder attracts a huge number of trekkers and mountaineers from around the world. You can hire guides, porters, cooks, servers, and other staff to stay put as it is a very challenging trek yet it is an epic experience.
Serengeti National Park
Serengeti is the flagship of Tanzania’s tourism industry and is one of the most popular game safari destinations in Africa. Derived from the Maasai word “siringert,” which literally translates to “the place where the land runs on forever,” which in fact is possibly the best way to describe these vast grassland plains that cover about 5700 square miles.
- The sight of the annual migration of wildebeest, zebra, crocodile, and honey badger in huge numbers is an unparalleled experience. Although you might have seen it on National Geographic, sitting in a safari 4×4 which goes through the wildlife is a whole other ballgame altogether. The sunrise balloon safari is a heavenly experience which no traveler should miss.
- East African lion, African leopard, African bush elephant, eastern black rhinoceros, and African buffalo, commonly referred to as the ‘big-five’ are the most popular animals among tourists. The abundance of wildlife and high biodiversity of the area pulls the tourists back time and again.
Lake Manyara National Park
- Considered to be one of the loveliest lakes in Africa, Lake Manyara offers the perfect opportunity for check out more than 300 migratory birds, including but not limited to grey-headed kingfisher, long-crested eagle, and flamingo. Herbivores such as impalas, hippos, elephants, wildebeests, warthogs, giraffes and buffalo can be easily spotted whilst baboons are found in the highest numbers here. It is also home to leopards and the famous population of tree-climbing lions which can be spotted if you move slowly enough whilst enjoying game drive in Lake Manyara National Park.
- Did you know that the Lake Manyara has alkaline waters? Lake’s waters have a pH of about 9.5 and the levels vary in different seasons. Although it is quite an underrated destination because it spans about 127 square miles, which is smaller when compared to other attractions in the area, but the development of Manyara Ranch, a 44000 acre conservation and tourism project in it close vicinity has caused a huge spike in the footfall in the Lake Manyara Biosphere Reserve which is a worthy initiative by UNESCO.
Zanzibar
- Often referred to as African Hong Kong, Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania which is just 16 miles off the coast of the mainland. One of the best destinations to relish the clear Indian Ocean water from its numerous hot sandy beaches, the island is also popular for its coral and limestone scarps that the tourists can enjoy by snorkeling and diving. The historical Stone Town is the ideal place for history buffs.

Selous Game Reserve, Pemba Island, Mafia Island, and Ruaha National Park are some other must-visit destinations that Tanzania has to offer. Click here to check out other safe and preferred destinations in Africa, things to do, accomodations, and more.
