Char Siu Fried Rice – Indonesian Style

Char Sui Nasi GorengPrior to going to Asia, street food had a different definition for me. Here in America, we think of street food as things that are easily eaten on the go as we walk – frankfurters, pretzels, gyros, empanadas…and the like. Although the street food scene in America and especially in large cities like NY and Los Angeles has evolved….it’s still a pale comparison to Asian street food. Pretty much everything is sold in the streets from hot soups and curries sold in little plastic bags to more elaborate hawker stands that provide seating on sidewalks. When we talk about Asian street food, if it’s Asian, I guarantee it’s being sold somewhere there by a street side hawker.

There are so many different versions of fried rice from Hong Kong to Penang to Bangkok to Jakarta…here’s a version I came up with using whatever I found in the fridge.

I had bits of odds and ends of leftover vegetables to use up before I went on vacation. What’s the easiest recipe to use up the bits and bobs of veggies -fried rice! Although this isn’t the traditional Nasi Goreng recipe, I went to the Indonesian side of my family with the flavor profile in this version of fried rice. I also had some leftover char sui (Chinese BBQ pork). That’s the best thing about fried rice – you can put all sorts of leftovers into it and it just improves the flavor.
