If you are in Italy, you might know this as a cremolata. Basically, it’s a fancy Italian word for slush. Anyone who grew up in the US remembers fondly trips to 7-Eleven for basically one reason, the slush. Remember the blue raspberry flavor? I cringe now to think what that was made with…we all know there aren’t any blue raspberries right? For most of us, that was our favorite flavor. I think mainly because we liked comparing whose mouth turned more blue afterwards. The little things that give us so much pleasure as children…

Here’s a slush that can be made quickly at home and instead of all the artificial food coloring that I am sure is used at 7-Eleven, this one gets its natural color from one thing…actual fruit…

I based my version of this Strawberry Slushie off of the Italian Cremolata with the addition of fresh basil. Cremolata is basically what we in America call ice (pronounced ice-y). For the picky kids, they might find the herbs weird. However, this Strawberry Slush is enhanced with these herbs.

With just a few simple ingredients, this makes a healthy summer snack.

Variations

If you have fresh seasonal summer fruit, you can also make this Strawberry Slushie Recipe with the same consistency using fresh fruit. Just replace the water in the recipe with ice.

Other frozen or fresh fruit that would taste wonderful in slush form includes mangoes, blueberries, pineapple and mixed berries.

Instead of basil, you can also use mint, rosemary, or lavender. All of these herbs will enhance the flavor of any fruit slushie.

For the adult version, instead of rum, you can use vodka, gin or your favorite liquor.

  1. I have said it many times, but still I have to repeat myself. I love reading your intros. It took me right back to childhood days when all that was expected from a drink was what color your tongue will be in the end! The brighter the color, the cooler the drink!

  2. It is such a summery drink. As the weather has been exceptionally warm this past few days, I guess we need not wait till summer to relish this cremolata.

Yes! I love strawberries and basil and often use the combination in desserts, but never made a cremolata before. LOVED IT! Basil is such a unique flavour that goes perfectly with strawberries! This may be my official drink of Summer 2022 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!
