Empire, Fuji, and Gala are just a few apples commonly available at most supermarkets. Macintosh, Delicious and Granny Smith’s usually finish the roundup. However, if you go to a really good gourmet market you might encounter a few more like Mitsu, Cameo and Pink Lady.

Unless you are an apple farmer, you might be overwhelmed and think one apple is just as good as another right especially if you come from another country that does not have this variety? Well no, apples range in taste and texture and different apples are good for different uses.

Most of us have 1 or 2 apples that we like and generally stick to those. I like sweet, crisp apples and usually buy Fuji or Gala. However, tart firm apples are better for baking. Granny Smith or Macintosh are best for baking.
Union Square Market is New York City’s largest farmer’s market. Farmers come from as far away as Pennsylvania and Ohio to sell their produce, dairy, grass fed meats, honey, syrup, flowers and yarn goods. The market is open 4 days a week 8am-6pm, 12 months a year – come rain, shine or snow – as reliable as the mailman!
One of my favorite vendor’s is Beth’s Farms with their variety of both sweet and savory jams and chutneys. They always have several bottles open to sample and if the one you want to sample isn’t open, they’ll do it for you. You can always taste it before your bring it home.

Now to the apples – I am going to let the photos do the talking for me.

…and I only took photos of about half of the varieties at the market..but at least its a start to guide you to discover more apples that you might like better than your standard go to apples.

Now if you are lucky enough to get some of these varieties at your local market, you have a better idea of which ones to sample for your taste preferences.

  3. Awesome post Mir. I love going to such fairs and in China we used to have something similar but it had all the veggies and fruits. It was really great. I learn quite a lot from your post now 🙂

  4. Thanks to your post I know what I am being offered when I am given apples. Generally I listen to the vendor and buy them there are times I want something and cannot explain to him. There are few that we do not get her but then thats fine. Thanks.
