This past weekend I was at the Lyceum Spring Food and Craft Fair. While I was selling our International selection of spice blends and teas, I also had the opportunity to visit some of the other vendors. There is a wonderfully diverse group of local food artisans, producing everything from bacon marmalade to ramp butter to earl grey truffles.
Luminous Kitchens was one of my favorite vendors. Delicious sweets like warm chocolate chip cookies coming out of their little pink oven, as well as a delicious roasted rhubarb tea cake. They were also making scallion pancakes and produce ramp butter. Personally, the ramp butter was a bit strong for my liking, but if you are one of those that like strong onion flavor – you might enjoy it!
Another vendor, Milk Made Ice Cream, had a wonderful mint brownie ice cream. This was made with real mint, not mint extract, mint essence or other artificially produced products to recreate the mint flavor in ice cream. This was bursting with fresh mint flavor – it tasted like fresh mint leaves. The best mint ice cream I have ever tasted!!!
While many of the markets operate year round, summertime finds many more markets open. There are many of them throughout the boroughs (except Staten Island), as well as Westchester and Rockland County. At these NY Community Markets, you can find some wonderful culinary products, as well as prepared foods and even local farm fresh fruits and vegetables.
I urge you to visit your local Community Market. You will have the opportunity to taste some very unique food products, not available at your local supermarket. In the process, you will be supporting your neighbors by choosing to patronize local food artisans.
Of course, Global Tastes & Travels will be at some of them, including the Greenpoint Food Market on May 16th, giving you the chance to sample food cooked with our delicious spice blends, as well as tea samples – so you can try the products before making the purchase commitment – prepared foods too!!!
