Champurrado – Mexican Chocolate Cornmeal Drink

Champurrado - Mexican Chocolate Cornmeal Drink - This thick and warm drink is perfect to enjoy on cold winter nights or for a comforting winter breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 cloves
  • 1 star anise
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 piloncillo
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 bar Mexican chocolate
  • ½ cup masa
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 12 oz. can evaporated milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Add the spices to a ssaucepan and let them dry roast for 1 minute.
  • Add 2 cups of the water and boil for 5 minutes so that the spices can infuse.
  • Add the piloncillo, chocolate and the salt.
  • On medium heat, let it simmer until the piloncillo and chocolate melts.
  • Meanwhile, in a dry skillet toast the masa until it starts to change color.
  • Transfer the piloncillo chocolate mix with all of the spices to a blender.
  • In a bowl, mix the toasted masa with 1 cup water until smooth.
  • Add masa mix to the blender with the milk, evaporated milk and vanilla.
  • Blend well until everything is well mixed.
  • In a saucepan, transfer the mixture from the blender.
  • On medium low heat, let it simmer for 5 minutes until thickened.
